One of the key is to know your sector of activity in terms of main actors and expertise. Then to also understand the best way to get in touch and interact depending on the country and the culture. For example, networking events are more prominent in Canada than in some European country.
One more thing to remember, when doing business development, even if at the beginning your network may be small, the more you work on it, the more you will get references and have an exponential list of contacts!
